Lasik (Laser in Situ Keratomileusis) eye surgery method,
is the latest
technology that has been adopted at Bangalore based Nethradhama
Eye Centre. If the Lasik suits the patient, then there is
no need to use glasses or contact lenses. For correction of
short and long sight as well as astigmatism, Lasik surgery
has been one of the greatest weapons in the armory of the
eye surgeon. But even that has its drawbacks. The Orbscan-II
Lasik was introduced only about a year-and-a-half ago in the
USA by Bausch and Lomb company and has now found its way to
the Super Vision Lasik Centre of Nethradhama Eye Centre in
Jayanagar.
According to Nethradhama chief surgeon, Dr Sriganesh,
each individual has different features in the eye and a readymade
Lasik cannot be done on all eyes. The Orbscan-II can be tailored
to suit every eye's specific requirements. It takes care of
all structural abnormalities which cannot be detected by conventional
corneal imaging systems. Besides, the surgery is fast and
complete. The procedure for each eye takes just 5-6 minutes.
Why Choose LASIK surgery method?
brief recovery time
relatively quick procedure to complete
very low risk of scarring
minimal discomfort
high degree of predictability
preservation of the cornea (all corneal layers preserved)
excellent ocular integrity post-treatment
widest range of correctable prescriptions
Lasik is an extremely effective outpatient procedure that
is suitable
not only for higher prescription but also patients with moderate
to low prescription. In this procedure a micro-surgical instrument
creates a corneal flap. The cool laser beam then gently reshapes
the inner layers of the cornea to correct the refractive error
and the flap is then put back. It reduces recovery time as
well, says Dr Sriganesh.
Does this treatment cause Cataract or Retinal damage?
This treatment does not cause or contribute to development
of Cataract and does not cause any retinal degeneration or
detachment. Cataract may develop due to the normal ageing
process and can be treated in the normal way. People often
ask how long the benefits of Lasik procedure will last. Laser
vision correction has been common in many countries around
the world since the last 1980's. In addition, many clinical
studies have looked at the long-term effects of the laser
on the cornea. While the long-term effects beyond six years
have not been studied, every study performed so far has shown
without exception that there are no long term negative effects
of the laser on the eye's integrity or strength.
Nethradhama is opened between 9am and 7pm on week
days and Sunday is holiday.
