Narayana Hrudayalaya - A hospital for the heart

The imposing structure of Narayana HrudayalayaHe has a heart for the poor. That’s why renowned cardiologistDr Devi Shetty’s brainchild - Narayana Hrudayalaya - offers treatment at subsidised rates to working class families and has 60 per cent of beds reserved for them.

Claimed to be the world’s largest heart hospital and research institute,the Hrudayalaya is a 280-bed facility with ten operation theatres (OTs) and infrastructure for performing 25 major heart surgeries each day.

According to Dr Shetty, the Rs 200-crore hospital on a Dr Devi Prasad Shetty12.5-acre land on Hosur Road near Bommasandra, will have 780 beds, 30 OTs and four cathlabs by 2002. The Asia Heart Foundation built the 2 lakh sq. ft. facility.

Dr Shetty says the hospital plans to acquire 12.5 more acresof land adjoining the site. Once the acquisition is complete, a self-contained township will be built there. Arrangements have also been made to accommodate the relatives of patients.

Also on the anvil is the Narayana School of Nursing that will provide students loans for education. It would be sponsored by Johnson & Johnson.

    The hospital is the hub for telecardiology networks with a joint venture between governments of north-eastern states, West Bengal, Karnataka Health Systems and ISRO for creating a chain of coronary care units in remote areas and offering modern cardiac care infrastructure.

    The communication networks between these areas will be aA cathlabrranged through VSAT communication provided by ISRO, free of cost.

    For charitable activities, the hospital is backed by Kiddies Heart Foundation, Sarojini Damodaran Charitable Trust, Mathrubhumi Medical Trust, Bagaria Trust, Prime Minister’s Relief Fund, Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, Health Minister’s Relief Fund, Mithun Chakraborty’s Amra, Society for Indian Children’s Welfare, Rotary and Lions Clubs and other philanthropic organisations.
