India
has the largest population of visibly impaired or partially blind
people in the world. Most of the vision-impaired are affected by cataract,
which is just a clouding of the eye lens or the surrounding
transparent membrane obstructing the passage of light. Simple removal
of the lens and replacement with an artificial one can change lives
of thousands of people. In recent years, eye camps conducted regularly
by people like Dr.Modi and others have helped thousands of patients
regain their vision.
Normally,
the artificial lens that is inserted in the eyes of the patient is
monofocal, which can only focus the eye to either near or far vision.
Often after the operation cataract patients had to wear bulky glasses.
Sometimes months or years after the surgery, the opacity will build
up again behind the implant. But now a new revolutionary multifocal
lens has been developed and is being released in India.
ARRAY multifocal
lens is truly a groundbreaking technology approved by ophthalmologists
the world over. Unlike the monofocal lenses that are currently available,
the Array lens is designed to provide the best possible far, near
and intermediate vision. This progressive refractive lens aims at
minimizing the dependence on spectacles and improving the quality
of life for patients. In addition to it, being a foldable lens offers
advantages in microincision surgery. Developed by Allergan Medical
Optics after nearly ten years of research, Array lens had
been launched in the USA sometime back. Now it is being released in
India and at present only a few select hospitals are using it.
As
such, cataract cannot be prevented, because the lens changes as the
body ages. However, some precautions may slow the development of cataracts.
One of them is wearing dark sunglasses to prevent ultraviolet (UV)
light rays, especially UVB rays, from hitting the eye and avoiding
heavy exposure to UV rays. Doctors believe that a diet high in antioxidants,
such as beta-carotene (vitamin A), Selenium and vitamins C and E,
can prevent cataract development. Avoiding other risk factors, such
as cigarette smoke, air pollution and heavy alcohol consumption, may
also help.
