Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) was established by an
industrialist
Walchand Hirachand under the name Hindustan Aircraft
Limited, which got registered as a private limited company in
December 23, 1940 with a capital of Rs 4 Crore. Production line
was inducted in collaboration with Inter Continental Aircraft
Company, US, for the manufacture of Harlow trainer, Curtiss
Hawk fighter and Vultee attack bomber. After the Second World
War in December 1945, the Indian government took over the management
and the Company's activities increased multifold after India
attained its freedom.
With a mission to become a globally competitive aerospace
industry while working towards achieving self-reliance in
design, manufacture and maintenance of aerospace defence equipment
and diversifying to related areas, HAL is concentrating in
the core areas of:
Design and development of fixed and rotary wing aircraft,
engines, avionics and accessories.
Manufacture, maintenance, repair and overhaul of fighters,
transport and trainer aircrafts, helicopters,
aero engines, avionics and ground support equipments.
Manufacture of structural components for satellite and launch
vehicles and developing software for aerospace
applications and also does design consultancy.
HAL has a lot of responsibilities towards the Indian armed
forces to produce a
major proportion of the aircrafts. It has built over three
thousand aircrafts, of which about 95 per cent have been for
the Indian Air Force (IAF). Apart from producing twenty
different types of aircrafts for IAF (of which 11 are indigenously
designed), it has produced fighters, medium and light transports,
helicopters and trainers required for the air force.
The Helicopter Division has produced nearly 600 helicopters
(under French license) and is now preparing for the exciting
future centering on Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH).
HAL has reached the present level of competence by surmounting
a lot of challenges over the years. It is one of the largest
aeron autical
industrial complexes in Asia. Vigorous expansion and diversification
of the production range has made it self-sufficient in modern
technology, as represented by production of aircraft and allied
equipment, whilst progressively building up the capability
to undertake the latest design and development of aircraft,
engines and systems. HAL's present achievements like Light
Combat Aircraft (LCA), a twin-engined Advanced Light
Helicopter (ALH) and other designs including the Intermediate
Jet Trainer (IJT) reflect the company's continual efforts
to update with modern technology.
HAL has 9 Research and Design Centres:
Aircraft R & D Centre
Rotary Wing R & D Centre
Aircraft Upgrade R & D Centre
Transport Aircraft R & D Centre
Engine Test Bed R & D Centre
Strategic Electronics R &D Centre
Aerospace Systems and Equipment R & D Centre
Gas Turbine R & D Centre and

Dr C G Krishnadas Nair is the Chairman of HAL. Equipped with
the latest facilities, the company is backed by high profile,
highly skilled manpower with an impressive track record of
more than five decades of rich experience in all disciplines
