There
are a wide range of options to choose from to power your home during
power shutdowns. A
generator is one of them. Genset is a pair consisting of a rotating
mechanical device and an alternator that generates electricity.
The Prime-mover is a rotating device which is run by one or the
other type of fossil fuel such as diesel, petrol, kerosene or LPG.
The engine produces rotation of its shaft which is coupled to the
shaft of the alternator. When the shaft is rotated, the alternator
produces electricity.
Choosing a genset
It
is important to bear in mind that the cost of power produced at
home is more expensive than what is supplied by the utility companies.
So, a conscious d e c i s i o n should be made on the quantum of
utilization of power during power outages - do you want the generator
to operate part or all of your home or office? Then determine the
wattage for each appliance and tool you plan to use frequently,
and identify motor and pump requirements. While computing power
requirement - especially power equipments there are two power requirement
specifications, the starting power and the running power. Make it
a point to take starting watts, not running watts, when determining
the correct electrical load requirements
Portable device
A portable generator is a gas or diesel powered device
that provides elec trical
power on a temporary basis, literally on demand. You can find portable
generators at market places, construction sites, camping sites,
disaster management operations in accident sites. These provide
power to a very wide range of electrical equipment ranging from
lighting systems driving equipment and tools. Here, whenever the
power outage occurs, a switch that isolates the power supply line
from the utility company is isolated and then the genset is manually
started. This is a low cost and economic solution. There are a few
problems associated with such a system depending on the technology
which include noise and air pollution.
Standby genset
Stationary or standby emergency generators are state-of
the-art fully automatic electric power generating systems that provide
quiet, reliable, clean, and safe emergency back-up power within
seconds of an outage, without human intervention. These are permanently
installed outdoors and are directly connected to the fuel source
such as diesel tank or natural gas pipeline wherever available.
Automatic transfer switch takes care of several human interventions
that the portable genset calls for.
