There goes Infosys again! Now they have hit the headlines, not for
their world class products and services, but for their dream-come-true
work place - the sprawling Infosys City. It is perhaps the
largest software campus for a software services company any where
in the world according to Phaneesh Murthy, head of sales and
marketing, Infosys Technologies.
Built in the electronic city on Hosur Road on nearly 50
acres of land in two pieces, the campus is also the largest single
location investment in India, which includes land, buildings and other
physical infrastructure. In the last 12 months, this complex has generated
a revenue of Rs 725 crore. At present, the total constructed space
is 900,000 sq ft, but it is expected to go up to 1.25 mn sq feet in
the next 12 months or so, and on completion will be able to accommodate
6,500 people.
The customer care building, one of the best constructed building
in Bangalore, has eight sets of conference rooms for use by customers,
a large lobby, a recruitment centre and a breakfast lounge to seat
100 people at a time. Another impressive construction is the meeting
room with a seating capacity for 100 and a large 10 x 4 squares video
wall being constructed at a cost of $1 million, which is the largest
in Asia. An experience theatre for $1.5 million, using the most sophisticated
equipment in the world, is also planned.
The campus has a dedicated knowledge infrastructure which includes
an Education and Research Centre, a 30,000 sq ft library, labs
to accommodate 150 people and class rooms to seat 200 people at a
time. At any given time, 1,000 software engineers can be trained in
this entire complex, being one of the single largest location training/education
centre for a software services company in the world.
Employee
Friendly
The city takes good care of its employees - and how! Three large food
courts serve North Indian, South Indian and Chinese cuisine. There
are three large kitchens with the capacity to cater to about 5,000
people. MTR, the best local caterer in Bangalore, will be serving
food here. For pizza addicts there is Dominos Pizza which offers 15
different kinds of pizzas. Finally, to bring this food world to completion,
there is a wonderful coffee shop serving 10 different kinds of coffee.
For the sweet toothed there is an ice cream stall. And if all this
does not satisfy the much-in-demand software employee, homecooked
food is also available so that young people do not miss 'mother's
cooking'.
The campus offers a number of sports and recreation facilities, including
a gymnasium, a basket ball court, two tennis courts, billiards and
snooker facilities and a swimming pool with changing rooms and showers.
And if that is not enough, there are saunas, steam baths, an outdoor
Jacuzzi, as well as a putting and chipping range for golf lovers on
campus. Well, here is one fun place to work!
Other facilities include a medical centre with two doctors and attendant
facilities and an ambulance in case of an emergency, a dance hall,
two bank offices of ICICI with four ATMs. Transportation is well taken
care of. Everyday sixty-nine buses ply into the campus and there is
a car-park facility for 250 cars. For employees travelling out of
the city or country, an on-campus travel centre facilitates booking
of tickets.
Going Green
The campus has a wastewater treatment plant to recycle waste water
which is then used for the lawns. The use of energy efficient equipment,
lighting and air conditioning reduces the power required per person.
Proper rain water harvesting ensures the recharging of the ground
water table. The present tree count of 3,500 is likely to go up to
6,000 when the campus is completed. Besides getting eminent visitors,
like the Prime Minister of Japan, Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland
and the Karnataka Chief Minister, to plant trees here, systematic
tree planting is being undertaken.
