Situated near the Visveswaraya Museum, the Karnataka State Lawn
Tennis Association (KSLTA) nestles in the beautiful green environs
of Cubbon Park.
The Association has played host to many
of the renowned Davis Cup matches. It provides training and guidance
to beginners, thereby helping them to build a foundation in tennis.
Its training centre offers summer camps for a period of three months
for individuals between 6 and 14 and also conducts group-coaching
camps. KSLTA is to host the Association of Tennis Professionals
(ATP) $750,000 World Doubles championship in December.
The event will feature the world's eight top doubles pairs. Leander
Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi are also expected to participate
in this mega event.
ATP Senior Vice-President, Brad Drewett, a former top-20
Australian tennis player, who inspected the stadium in July, was impressed
with the facelift being given to the stadium.
An
all weather synthetic surface, which is being imported from the
USA, is going to be carpeted on the three tennis courts of the stadium.
Prestige cushion will be used in laying the synthetic surface in the
play area and the interiors of the stadium are to be modernized to
international standards.
The stadium will have permanent seating. The stadium complex will
be modified slightly to accommodate a separate players' room. A VIP
lounge, an Announcement Room, a hi-tech Media Centre are going
to be set up in the stadium. The renovation being taken up in the
stadium will be completed by the end of October.
The Administrator of the KSLTA, Vasanth Madhav, said
that the renovation cost of the stadium is estimated around Rs
4 Crores. The renovation work has been authorised to Shyamaraj
Constructions and Swathi construction companies. The renovated stadium
will be inaugurated by a renowned personality at the time of World
Doubles championship in December. Major tennis tournaments are to
be held in October and November also.
