Adventure
has scaled new heights in the State, and Karnataka Mountaineering
Association (KMA) has been pursuing and striving to infuse the
spirit of participation among adventure-seekers.
Karnataka Mountaineering Association (KMA) is a pioneer organisation
in South India, dedicated to the cause of promoting adventure activities
among the youth.
The Association has completed over 30 years of adventurous existence.
It initially functioned from the steps of Kanteerava Stadium (Bangalore).
The zeal for adventure coupled with the able guidance of people like
Brig. V. P. Naib, (late) Shri Nettakalappa and (late)
Shri Kondajji Basappa helped the Association grow in stature.
Today, KMA has the expertise and the equipment to organise full-scale
Himalayan expeditions. It has so far organised 35 expeditions. This
itself is an adventure!
The Association has more than 120 members who have successfully completed
Basic and Advanced Mountaineering Courses conducted by various Mountaineering
Institutes in India. Many trained members have also served as guest
instructors for various courses conducted by the Mountaineering Institutes
in Darjeeling and Uttarkashi. Some members have accompanied foreign
expeditions as liaison officers. There are a few who have been honoured
by the Government of Karnataka with State and Dasara awards. The Government
of Karnataka gifted a piece of land at Ramanagaram (situated about
46 kms from Bangalore is a rock-climbe'rs paradise) to KMA for the
construction of a fully equipped Rock-Climbing Institute. The legendary
"Tiger of Snow" - Tenzing Norgay, laid the foundation stone
for the Institute in 1977.
Trekking
is an adventure sport, which attracts many people and becomes a healthy
addiction once the individual establishes rapport with Mother Nature.
It is a dream of every trekker to step into the Himalayan ranges -
the land of snow, and tackle the challenges of that region. KMA has
seen several of its members successfully realise such dreams in the
past 30 years.
The Association organises Himalayan climbing expeditions, Himalayan
trekking expeditions, rock-climbing training camps, explorative treks,
river rafting, para-sailing, exhibitions, talks and slide-shows on
mountaineering, aids in training of NCC cadets, assists adventure
clubs in organising adventure activities, conducts regular weekend
rock-climbing and trekking programs, and sponsors youngsters to undergo
Basic and Advanced Mountaineering courses, and Adventure courses in
various Mountaineering Institutes in India.
Every year during Christmas vacation, the association organises a
five-day camp in adventure activities. The KMA plans to conduct a
"clean-up project" at Nandi Hills to spread the message of a clean
and green environment.
