Have
an Eco - Adventurous Weekend!
What
are you doing this weekend? If you want to enjoy your time trekking
on hilly regions or camping in wild jungles, ANGEL has the
answer.
ANGEL (Adventurous Naturalist Group
of Educational Legion) is a combined effort of a group of professionals
having more than a decade of experience in trekking, mountaineering
and water sports. The club assists adventure lovers to understand
nature and environment - they combine both entertainment and education.
They
have led several teams to the Himalayas (scaling altitudes
of 21,000 ft. to 25,000 ft. on many mighty peaks), Western Ghats
and hilly regions of the Deccan plateau. The club aims to promote
adventure activities and educate people to be environment conscious.
The club has a programme schedule, which includes activities like
trekking, camping and cave exploration. They even help you
customize your adventure camps and activities to suit your requirements.
You can either choose outdoor activities or indoor activities like
video shows on environment. "Most people prefer the outdoors because
that is where the fun is," says Suresh, Secretary of ANGEL.
Suresh is an experienced mountaineer with more
than ten years of experience in the field. His peak achievement was
when he scaled the 21,500 ft. Flutted Peak in Himachal Pradesh.
The
club has divided its activities into three sections:
1. Terrestrial sports: Trekking, camping, rock climbing, cycling,
cave exploration, skiing, high altitude mountaineering, wildlife study,
bird watching, star gazing etc.
2. Aqua sports: Rafting, wind surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving
etc.
3. Aero sports: Parasailing, parajumping etc.
The indoor activities include audio-visual
programmes (slide talks and video shows) and providing information
about environment related topics.
The great outdoors is where nature is - it is the learning laboratory
through which one can develop physical and intellectual abilities,
teamwork, patience, leadership qualities, confidence and concentration.

The other popular activities include jummering and rappling,
which are usually enjoyed by amateurs. There is no age limit for these
camps. Children can have a gala time accompanying their parents, as
they not only learn the techniques of trekking, but also learn more
about nature and the world around them. "It is the younger ones
who enjoy the most rather than the elders," says Suresh, with
a smile.
Passionate about ecological issues, Suresh decries the recent cropping
up of many small-time adventure clubs in Bangalore, which are run
by inexperienced trainers. "It is always a risk when you go with
them. They are not environment-conscious. When they camp in some place,
they litter and cause damage to the environment. I am very particular
about these things. We provide the campers
a lot of infomation on environmental topics. Even during the night,
we avoid lighting bonfires, as we care for the environment…
" Angel encourages group camps with
a minimum number of ten participants. The fee charged by them (which
is quite nominal) includes accommodation (which would usually be in
a tent), transportation and food. Recently, they conducted treks to
Bannerghatta and cave explorations in Chitradurga.
Considering the risks involved in these adventure
camps, Angel takes necessary precautions. They carry a first-aid
box, rope and other things required during an emergency. "These
adventure camps," says Suresh, "are safer than walking on a city
street."
