Sunil
is the youngest world FIDE rated player of Karnataka.
Currently, he is placed second in the State open classical chess
championship. Being a FIDE rated player, he is the current National
Chess Champion in U-12 Category.
Thirteen-year-old R.Sunil is studying in the eight standard at MES
Kishora Kendra, Malleswaram. Initiated into the royal game of
Kings and Queens by his elder brother R Sunad at the age of
four, Sunil was immediately hooked to the game with the encouragement
of his parents R Rangarajan and Vani Rangarajan. His
coach, International Master and two times National Champion,
Raja Ravisekhar, has been influential in making him a master tactician
in the endings.
He bagged the State Championship 19 times in different categories
(Under-8, Under-10, Under-14 Rapid, Under-12 Rapid, State 'B' Open
of 1997 and State Open-Rapid-2000). He stood No.4 in the World
Youth Games in the Under-12 category conducted at Moscow, Russia
and got the 10th place in the World Championship held at Spain
where players from 101 countries had participated. There were nearly
15 players with ELO rating of more than 2300, the first seed
having the rating of 2397.
Sunil
has represented Karnataka several times for National Events. Being
the National champion in U-12 category for the year 1999, he represented
India in the Commonwealth Chess Championship. He was the only
player to represent India from Karnataka State besides International
Master D V Prasad.
He has been awarded 'Chinnara Prashasthi' (a state level award)
for the year 1998-99 by Karnataka Chinnara Sahitya Pratisthana,
Dharwad.
