Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, is one of the finest Art colleges
we have in the city today. Located on Kumara Krupa Road, the
art complex is huge and is majorly responsible for the promotion
of citys art and culture.
Founded
in the year 1960, the institute houses five permanent galleries
arid that stores innumerous traditional and contemporary artworks.
It regularly hosts exposition of artwork and handicrafts by
artisans/artists from all over the world. The gallery especially
stresses upon promoting contemporary Indian art.
The Parishath's permanent collection is constantly growing.
Dr. S. Roerich, one of its closet associates, donated a slew
of his father's and his own painting to it. Two exclusive gallery
floors have been dedicated in his memory, where these priceless
works are on a permanent display.
Noted and a generous artist H.K. Kejriwal has not only donated
his rare collection of art and artefacts, but has donated huge
sums to raise a separate gallery for their display. To promote
young artists, a H.K. Kejriwal Award for 6 young artists, is
instituted from the year 1998.
Internationally recognised graphic artist, Dr Krishna Reddy
too has gifted his valuable graphic prints exhibition to the
Parishath. Some popular paintings of Mr. S.S.Kukke are the other
additions to this list. The Mysore traditional style of painting,
which was almost extinct, has been revived by the Parishath
under the guidance of Master Artist Y.Subramanaya Raju. It has
reached touched new horizons today.
The open-air theatre at the Parishath hosts performing arts
like folk dance and street theatre. A fully equipped graphic
workshop and a sculpture studio were also added to the gallery.
Artist camps and
workshops are a regular feature here. In collaboration with
UNESCO, it extends patronage to traditional art forms of Karnataka.
It has played a proactive role in preserving indigenous art
forms like leather puppetry.
Chitrakala Parishath is also known for its College of Fine Arts.
Established in 1964, it is among the top art institutes in the
country. Bachelor degrees in Fine Arts are offered in painting,
sculpture, art history and print-making.
Chitra Santhe, a massive festival and exhibition of art works
held annually is another facet about Parishat
The event that is about five-years-old features artists from
all over the country. Thousands of artists and visitors adding
up to a lakh participate.
The santhe (gathering) displays paintings, graphic prints, miniatures,
sculptures, oil on canvas, Madhubani, lithographs, collage and
variety of oil paintings. Its on the lines of art shows
in London and Paris.
Its is a platform for emerging artists who can interact
with highly experienced ones. It is an incredible setting with
a very lively and artistic atmosphere. By conducting Chitra
Santhe, a new dimension is added to the artists work. Talent
from rural areas also gets exposure and professionals who visit
the santhe can identify such talent and encourage them.

TThe Chitrakala Parishath is rightfully called the citys
landmark for contemporary art in South India. It is a gateway
for research, exhibition of various artists and serious study
of art. It has to its credit a list of some established and
upcoming artists in the country. Though it would be wrong
to draw comparisons yet the esteemed institute is equal to
other prestige\ious institute of the country.
It is aptly equipped for the study of painting, sculpture,
applied art and art history at the graduate level. The Chitrakala
Institute of Advanced Studies offers post-graduate and doctoral
training. A resource centre for humanities and art studies,
the institutes publications in Kannada and English are
well known and widely distributed.
The college offers a Bachelor's degree called Bachelor of
Fine Arts (B.F.A). The qualification is S.S.L.C and an aptitude
towards Visual Arts. The selection of candidates is by a practical
examination and personal interviews. The Roerich College of
Art is an integral part of the Parishath offering the B.F.A
courses.
The college also offers Masters in Fine Arts (M.F.A). An extension
called Chitrakala Institute of Advanced Studies (CIAS) has
been established to cater to the ever increasing demand for
Master degree courses.

Nearly three decades old, The Ken School of Art offers a five-year
Bachelor's programme similar to the one offered by CKP. Started
by the eminent artist R M Hadpad, the faculty includes several
notable artists from the state like R Umesh, Uma Devi, H Ravindra
and the principal JMS Mani.

On the footsteps India's premier design institute, the National
Institute of Design, Srishti's faculty and students aim at
finding solutions for the needs of society through art and
design. Students are first enrolled in a year long Foundation
Studies Programme that focuses on building their skills through
a multi-disciplinary approach and lays emphasis on experimentation
and self- assessment. One has the option to specialise either
in Fine Arts, Communication Design, Fashion Design, Textile
Design or Furniture Design.
Students are imparted practical training through community
projects with production houses, design studios, retail establishments
and showrooms.
