Vidya Bhavan, founded with the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi
on November 7, 1938, nearly a decade before the advent
of Independence, has grown into a comprehensive all-India intellectual,
cultural and educational movement. Its founder, Kulapati Dr.
K.M. Munshi, considered the Bhavan as an 'Adventure in Faith',
a faith in India's rich cultural heritage. Its goal is revitalising
Dharma or Moral Law in its three-fold aspects of Truth, Love
and Beauty. The Bhavan's ideal is : Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: "The
World Is One Family"; its motto is: Aa no bhadraah kratavo
yantu vishwatah: "Let noble thoughts come to us from every
side."
Started in 1965 in a rented premises, the Bangalore Bhavan later
moved into its own building which was constructed on land granted
by the Government of Karnataka during the Chief Ministership
of Sri S. Nijalingappa. The foundation-stone for the building
was laid by Late Shri. Lal Bahadur Shastry, the then Prime Minister
of India, on January 23, 1965. Later Dr. V.V.Giri, the then
President of India, inaugurated the present building on November
16, 1966. Since then, the Bangalore Kendra has contributed much
to the development of art, culture and education in Karnataka.
The Bhavan provides a platform to artistes to exhibit their
talents and cultural programme are organized here throughout
the year.
The Khincha Auditorium was inaugurated during the
Vasanthotsava'96 and later other additional features were added,
such as multiple level flooring to facilitate easy viewing,
ceramic titles, state-of-the-art light and sound system with
powerful speakers. A false ceiling has been fixed to make the
auditorium sound proof. The stage has been extended by another
8 to 9 feet. Two green rooms have been constructed above the
stage for the use of performing artistes.

The Rajam Hall, where evening programmes used to be held
earlier, has been converted into an art gallery to display the
works of leading artists. Various exhibitions, painting, book
releases, music concerts, Rotary meetings, arbitration, Press
meetings, conducting classes in Bharatnatyam are organised here.

Cultural Programmes
The
cultural programmes that are held at the Bhavan have been attracting
a large number of people. These programmes can be classified
broadly into entertaining and informative. They include classical
dance ballets, Carnatic and Hindustani style of music concerts,
dramas and cinemas, programmes in light music, discourses in
epics and scriptures, seminars and symposia on various subjects
of interest including medicine, lectures and interaction with
city administrators.
Bhavan's Art Gallery
The
Gallery's motto is 'Art for Arts Sake' and is open to all artists
and no entry fee is collected from the visitors. The Bhavan's
aim is to hold exhibitions every month to create a sustained
interest in the public in visual art. All forms of arts/crafts,
traditional and modern, photographs, sculpture, can find place
in the Art Gallery. Light music, aesthetic wooden frames to
facilitate display of pictures and courteous staff create the
right atmosphere for the display of visual creative work at
Bhavan's Art Gallery. Plans are on the anvil to hold artists'
camps as well as a poetry gallery in the coming months.

Projects undertaken by the Bangalore Bhavan
· The translation of Indian History and Culture of the Indian
People into Kannada.
· The translation of the Complete Works of Mahatma Gandhi into
Kannada
· The recording of the Kumara Vyasa Bharata on to audio cassettes
