Where lines were unleashed to
convey messages
When
some things are not certain, believe in uncertainty!
That seemed to be the message conveyed by the cartoon
exhibition 'LINE OF NO CONTROL'. The title
of the event was in striking contrast to the themes
that were featured through the cartoons which had
all the necessary controls to make viewers laugh.
The cartoons were as diverse as the cartoonists
themselves who have built a common forum called
CARTOONISTS UNANIMOUS (CU) to exhibit their
skewed lines. Drawn
from various professions like advertising, science,
journalism and the net, these CU members came together
at the Alliance Francaise recently. This
exhibition was the third in the CU series of exhibitions.
Their earlier shows were 'PEACE' and 'POLITIX-THE
MASALA MIX' held in 1998 and 1999 respectively.
Ayan Guha, Samita Rathor, Balraj K N and
Rashed Kappan are members of Cartoonists Unanimous,
though certainly not anonymous entities in this
field. Their cartoons and caricatures at the exhibition,
mostly in black and white, were drawn on various
subjects/topics like government, education, net
savvy Indians, technology, terrorism and other aspects
in the Indian context.
Balraj depicted the funny situations that a common
man encounters in his daily life, Samita did the
same in context to citylife. Her trendy pocket cartoon
series Bharti World was concerned with children.
Rasheed's stark black and white contrasting style
and silhouettes aptly symbolized the characters .
Ayan Guha's effort proved that one picture…oops…a
cartoon is worth a thousand words. His caricature
oriented images revolving around scientificand literary
aspects made an in-depth impression on the mind-canvas
of the concerned.
On the use of computers in her work, Samita said
that it enhanced ideas besides making the images
more visually appealing, which was important these
days. Commenting on his politically motivatedsubjects,
Rasheed said, "Yes, I do love to incorporate
political subjects in my lines as people love to
watch politicians mocked, which only a cartoonist
can effectively do. And this style of mine permits
the publisher to sell his space in a unique way."
Balraj was of the opinion that the media should
create opportunities for freshers.
In a world of uncertainty, this exhibition certainly
had the viewers laughing at
themselves.
