Chowdaiah Memorial Hall

Chowdaiah Memorial HallAn ornamental memorial to the violin maestro, Chowdaiah, the Chowdaiah Memorial Hall is the first building of its kind in the world. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that an aeriel view of this monument reveals the shape of a violin.

Designed in 1980, it is a highly functional cultural centre, equipped with modern equipment in sound and light. The Chowdaiah Hall boasts of a high-tech echo unit, sonic maximizer, amplifiers, speakers, flood and spot lights.

The stage measures 62 feet long and 32 feet wide. Centrally air-conditioned, this is a domicile for dance, music and drama concerts, operas, ballets, conferences, screening of news reels and films to mention just a few. The seating capacity of 1045 is carefully laid out to give the audience an unobstructed view of the stage from any part of the auditorium.

Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan

Bharatiya Vidya BhavanThe Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (BVB), a centre for learning Indian arts, culture and history, was constructed in 1965. Classes in the Bhagawad Gita, the Upanishads, and the Brahma Sutras, instrumental music, Sanskrit, classical music, Bharatnatyam and yoga are conducted here. The College of Communication offers courses in Journalism, Public Relations, Business and Personnel Management, Computers, with a faculty of qualified professionals and academicians. It also houses the Gandhi Center of Science and Human Values.

Sir Puttanna Chetty Town Hall

Sir K. P. Puttanna Chetty Town HallSir K. P. Puttanna Chetty, President of the Bangalore Municipality (1913-1920), donated this imposing structure to the city. Built in 1935, it is a stone structure in European-Classical style. A huge flight of steps leads to the porch which rests on Tuscan columns. Two similar porches are on either side of the building. An auditorium forms the main portion of the building, used for an amazing variety of Performing Arts shows. The Town Hall has become a nodal centre for entertainment. The majesty of Sir Puttanna Chetty Hall has remained untainted and untouched by Western influences and changes since 1935.

Ravindra Kalakshetra

Ravindra KalakshetraThe Ravindra Kalakshetra, inaugurated in 1963 to celebrate the birth centenary of Rabindranath Tagore, is a major centre for performing arts. A launching pad for the various local theatre groups like Ranga Sampada, Spandana, Prayoga Ranga, the Kalakshetra also encourages other cultural activities like the Yaksha gana, Musical nights and Folk lores. The theatre is air conditioned and the stage is 63 feet long and 50 feet wide with a seating capacity of 966.

Max Mueller Bhavan

Max Mueller BhavanMax Mueller Bhavan (MMB) began in 1960 to bridge the cultural gap between India and Germany. The MMB has a library with videos, books and periodicals (no membership fee). Short term and long term German language courses are conducted for adults and children here. Exchange of cultural values are promoted with performances in dance, music and theatre by German artists. Also, programmes are held to promote education, social sciences, art, cinema exhibitions, workshops and seminars. Screenings of classic and contemporary German films with accompanying discussions are also held. The MMB is also affiliated to CIVIC, an organisation that promotes urban development in Bangalore.

Alliance Francaise De Bangalore

Alliance FrancaiseThe Alliance Francaise was conceptualised in 1970, with the help of the French Embassy. Designed to function as a cultural centre and a language teaching institute, more than a thousand students take long term and crash courses in French here. The Alliance Francaise is a cultural landmark with the backing of over 400 members. Various performances in painting, photography, theatre and dance by Indian and foreign artists are held at the Alliance throughout the year. The Artist Repertory Theatre (ART), a prolific theatre group in Bangalore has showcased many of its productions at the Alliance Francaise. The Asterix Club at the Alliance is exclusively for children.
Other facilities include: An information cell on France, a translation cell, a video library, an art gallery, an auditorium, a dance studio and a cafeteria.
