Bangalore as a city and Karnataka as a state have a different stake altogether.
Bangalore has a blend of both classic and modern dance to boast of, unlike
the state in which classical folk is favourite. The example of one such
famous classic folk form of dance is Yakshagana. This ages old vibrant folk
dance is performed in paddy fields, sometimes all night long. It is Karnataka's
one of the flavours. Bangalore as a city has modern approach and dance as a form of therapy has been widely accepted. Among South Indian dances Bharatanatyam is favourite. It is both taught and practiced widely in the state. Dances like Kalaripayettu and Kathak, though not from Karnataka have entered the city scene. Kalaripayettu, is a martial art form of Kerala and Kathak is the north Indian classical dance style. Odissi, a dance form from the sate of Orissa, also penetrated the classical streamline here with the efforts of Nrityagram, the dance village on the outskirts of the city. One can opt form graduation degree as well as post graduation degree in different classical dance forms. Another artiste that needs to be mentioned about is Tripura Kashyap, a teacher, therapist and also a choreographer. She introduced the concept of Dance Movement Therapy (DMT). A well trained classical' dancer and martial arts expert, she founded the Apoorva Dance Theatre. Her DMT is based on Indian folk and classical dance and is learnt as a non-medical treatment for a range of disabilities, from mental retardation to visual and aural impairments. Attakalari is a public charitable trust formed by artists specializing in different disciplines, devoted to develop South Asian contemporary dance. Web- www.natyamaya.in Famous Kathak danseuse and choreographer Maya Rao founded this school. It is affiliated to Bangalore University. It is the only dance school that awards a degree in choreography. Here training is imparted both as performers as well as choreographers, in Kathak. Making Kathak as their base, the students pick up skills both in traditional and contemporary choreography. Most of the school's dancers, Indian as well as foreign, come here on a fellowship. The dance school is set in the outskirts of Bangalore. She embarked on
the path of preserving seven Indian dance forms and two martial art forms.
Nrityagram is a community of dancers who follow the ancient gurukul tradition.
The dance institute imparts training in Odissi and Btharatanatyam in intensive
three year residential programme in dance. The lessons in Indian literature,
mythology, music, philosophy and the history of dance are a part of the
curriculum. Regular non-residential workshops are conducted in martial

It is run by dancer Padmini Ravi. She also has wide knowledge of other Indian classical dance forms, choreography and music. Tel- 2333 3993. Sanchari is run by Bharatanatyam dancer, Vani Ganapathy. Vani got trained by Guru Kalyana Sundaram in Bombay. She teaches Bharatanatyam to a select group of young dancers. Stem Dance Theatre 62, 4th main 18th Cross, Malleswaram, Bangalore- 560055 Tel- 2334 8645 Web- www.stemdance.org Stem stands for-Space, Time, Energy and Movement. It's a contemporary dance group, fusing traditional dance form with newer ones. The dancers here are taught modern dance techniques, Yoga, classical dance, martial arts and mime. The founder of the group is dancer and choreographer, Madhu Nataraj Heri. It is one of the few schools we have in the city that teaches Kuchipudi, the classical dance from Andhra Pradesh. Manju Bhargas, who herself is an award winning dancer runs this school.
