Dhokra is an ancient art of metalware done by the
tribal communities of Orissa, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh.
For the first time this unique Dhokra metal handicrafts were
exhibited and sold in Bangalore through the Central Cottage
Industries Emporium (CCIE). As part of its anniversary celebrations,
the CCIE had added the collections of Dhokra art pieces
to its crafts exhibition held in August 2000.
The uniqueness of the miniature dhokra craft lies in its folk
style which is also aesthetic in appearance. "Each artefact
is unique," says Mr Indu Shekar while explaining how
laboriously tribal artisans create each piece. These metal artefacts
are produced through "lost wax process". Drummers, horses, long
pipes, Ganeshas in different styles and sizes, metal masks,
busts, and other images in metal castings are available here.
They cost between Rs 450 to Rs 1,500.
