Gurukala
Kendra in Jakkur Layout, is famous for its terracotta
craft, especially Ganesha idols. The craft production-cum-training
centre is involved in the crafting of earthen artefacts
like diyas, magic lamps, pen stands, agarbathi stands
and a number of other utilitarian earthenware. Come
Ganesha festival, customers throng to the
centre in advance to book orders for Ganesha idols.
The centre has sculpted thousands of marvellous
idols of Ganesha for the last Ganesha Chaturdasi.
It receives orders from Mumbai, Poona, Chennai,
Goa and other cities in the country. The centre
also holds regular exhibitions at places like Safina
Plaza.
Sai Baba Ashram, Puttaparthy had placed
an order with the Kendra
for an eight foot Ganesha idol. This large
Ganesha idol has been embedded with 101 tiny idols
of Parvathi, Shiva, Shivalinga, Ganeshas
and rats in an order that reveals the story
of Ganesha. H R Siddalinge Gowda is the
master artisan who owns the crafts centre. Though
he is proficient in wood and stone sculpture,
the demand for his terracotta craft is much greater
he says.
How
did Gowda start Gurukala Kendra? He
was employed as 'supervisor' by Canara Bank for
its Kausalya crafts production centre
in Jogaradoddi, Ramanagaram, where training was
being given to amateur artisans. Gowda threw
up his supervisor's job after 13 years of service
and started the Gurukala Kendra with a loan
under Rozgar Yozana scheme. Here he imparts
training in terracotta craft to enthusiastic students.
Presently eight students are learning the craft
from Gowda. He even pays a stipend and
provides lodging to the students during the training
period, which ranges from six to nine months.
Students trained by him have opened up their own
studios of terracotta craft in Bangalore and other
places in the state. His wife, Soubhagya
also helps him in crafting the artefacts.
Do you want to learn the craft? Are you planning
to buy diyas or a lovely terracotta craft? Then
step into the beautiful world of Gurukala Kendra.
