Kannada Bhavan - Promoting Karnataka's Rich Cultural Heritage

The Department of Kannada and Culture (DKC) has chalked out many projects to promote the Kannada language and its rich cultural heritage in theKannada Bhavan fields of literature, music, dance, fine arts, folk, theatre and others. Housed in the Kannada Bhavan, this department is encouraging other organisations to promote Kannada language and culture.

DKC, incepted in 1977, was operating from its office located on Nrupatunga Road until 1998, when it moved to the present building on JC Road. It organises several programmes like Kaavya Kaveri, Ranga Suggi, Sangeeta Sudhe, Darshana, Kala Grama, Chiguru to promote culture and related activities. It also participates in some major festivals like Jilla Utsav, Hampi Utsav, Kadambotsav, Vachana Sangeetotsav and Gadinada Utsav. DKC also identifies and honours personalities who serve in the field of dance, sculpture, music, folk, and theatre with the Rajyotsava award, Pampa award, Sri Kanaka-Purandara award, Varnashilpi Venkatappa award, Janapada Sri award, Jakanachari award, Dr Gubbi Veeranna award, T Chowdiah award, Shantala Natya award, Karnataka Ratna award and many other awards.

Kannada Bhavan: DKC has wings like the Ravindra Kalakshetra, Kalabhavan (Mysore) and a host of auditoriums in each district of Karnataka promoting art and culture. Soon, it was faced with the necessity of having its different wings and supporting bodies operating under a single roof and hence Kannada Bhavan (KB) came into existence on November 29, 1998. Since its inception, it has become a source of information for all who visit the Bhavan seeking details about the language and its culture.

Located on the busy J C Road, Kannada Bhavan houses various academiesShilpa vana around Kannada Bhavan promoting literature (Karnataka Sahitya Academy), music (Karnataka Nritya Academy), theatre (Karnataka Nataka Academy), sculpture (Karnataka Shilpakala Academy) among others. KB has two divisions-Kadamba and Chalukya, each aimed to serve different cadres.

Kadamba:
In its basement Talamane, it has Nayana (an auditorium), Akshara (a library), Chitra (art gallery) and Pustaka Chavadi (department for book sales). First floor (Nela Mane) has conference halls-Antaranga and Mukta Sabhagriha besides administrative offices. Melmane is KB's first floor and has Bangalore chapter's offices, Academy for Sculpture, Dhwani (audio centre), Drishya (video centre) and Sanchaya (information centre). Second floor (Upparige) houses academies of literature, dance, music and fine arts.

Chalukya: This section intends to incorporate Kannada Development Authority and other academies. Ample space is being reserved for parking in its basement. KB has a beautiful garden Shilpavana around it where many works of contemporary sculptors add beauty to the environs.
