Bhat is a lively Hindustani music vocalist and
a singer of devotional songs. "Hindustani music
is all about emotion, while Carnatic music is grammar,"
he says.
Born in a family of priests in Kundapura, he learnt
Sanskrit and Vedic texts from his father and grandfather.
He toured with Ubhaya Gana Vidushi Shyamala G.
Bhave all over South India, including the United
States of America, and gave performances in Jugalbandhis
(26 concerts in all).
A bank employee, he devotes more of his time to
music. "Actually, being a bank employee is more
or less hampering my music career. I am planning
to quit my bank job and devote my life to music,"
he says in a firm tone.
He has secured a 10th rank in B.Com (Mysore University).
He has also done his L.L.B from Bangalore University.
He learnt harmonium from his first guru, Acharya
Govardhan V. Shanbag Kundapara. Later, he learnt
Hindustani, Carnatic vocal, harmonium, sitar and
devotional songs in Kannada, Hindi, Marathi and
Konkani from Vidushi Lakshmi G. Bhave and
her daughter Shyamala G. Bhave. He learnt
playing the tabla from Gurunandan Kalyanpur.

He has been regularly singing Devotional songs in
Kannada and Konkani for AIR (All India Radio)
and Doordarshan. He is a B-Grade Hindi
bhajan singer of Bangalore Akashvaani. Presently,
he is the Secretary of Saraswati Sangeet
Vidyalaya and also teaches Hindustani and Carnatic
music to the students of the music school. He has
contributed a feature series - 'Rithu taranga'
(pieces on music for all seasons) to the popular
Kannada magazine Taranga. He has
recorded several solo and group cassettes in Sanskrit
and Pali.

Ubhayagana
Vidushi Shyamala G. Bhave has made landmark
achievements in her illustrious music career spanning
over five decades. She was born to a family of
artistes on 14.3.1941. She was a child prodigy.
She picked up the art of music by observing her
parents (Father Acharya Govind Vithal Bhave
and Mother VidushiLakshmi G Bhave)
teaching others.
She has the exceptional ability to compose any
tune in less than two minutes. Her music is a
combination of several traditions. She sings with
involvement and re-creates the atmosphere of the
song. Her enthusiasm for music is like a burning
flame, undeterred by criticism.
She learnt Hindustani music in Gwalior Gharana
style from her parents and Carnatic music from
B.Doreswamy and Gana Sudhakara A. Subba
Rao. She was taught to play the harmonium
by her father and the piano by Mrs Dias.
Over the years, she has learnt to play sitar,
veena, jalatarang and dilruba. She can play all
these instruments with equal dexterity.
She gave her first public concert in Hindustani
music at the age of six at Maharashtra Mandal
in Bangalore. She has performed in major music
conferences all over India and other parts of
the world.
As a 'Cultural Ambassador' of India, she
toured U.S.A, U.K., Germany, Holland, Italy, Afghanistan,
Kabul, Sri Lanka, etc., popularising Indian music
through concerts and educative programmes.
She has given recitals in Hindustani classical,
Carnatic classical, Jugalbhandhis and Light music,
including the much-acclaimed Ubhayagaan Concert
(the only performing vocalist).
In addition to being a practitioner of music,
Guru Shyamala Bhave has been associated with various
cultural organisations. She is the present Chairperson
of the Karnataka Sangeeta Nritya Academy.
Some of her favourite singers include M L Vasanta
Kumari, Maharajapuram Santanam, Lata Mangeshkar,
who have learnt a few select compositions from
her.

She was conferred the title - 'Nightingale
of India' by Columbia University, New
York and she holds the distinction of being awarded
a Doctorate degree from Houston University,
U.S.A. In 1997, American Biographical Institute,
U.S.A., gave her the 'Woman of the Year'
award, 1997.
Some of her musical features are Chitra Raag,
Gaana Bharathi, Haridasa Parampara and Jugalbandhi.
Her cassettes and discs of classical music and
devotional songs in various languages (Hindi,
Kannada, Marathi and Prakrit) are very much in
demand today. She has composed over 1500 devotional
songs, Bhavgeeths and folk music. She has also
lent voice to some award winning films like Hamsageethe,
Adi Shankaracharya, Sri Ramanujacharya, etc.
Now, she is actively managing the Saraswati Sangeet
Vidyalaya - music school established by her
parents in 1931, and the two production units (Swarsatkar
and Swar Anand), which are adjacent to the Vidyalaya.
