College of Percussion
|

A famous mridangam player TAS Mani and Ramamani,
started the Karnataka College of Percussion (KCP). The college has achieved
significant international recognition. Its vibrant fusion group, Tala
Tarangini, has performed in abroad and back home. The KCP focuses mainly
on only Carnatic percussion instruments like the mridangam, ghatam, kanjira
and morsing and also incorporates konnakol, the art of uttering percussive
syllables articulately, sometimes at impossible speeds. The variety and
complexity of their rhythmic work has fascinated musicians from the West,
especially those interested in jazz. Several students are given training
annually in percussive disciplines of this tradition. The cream talent
is finally included in the troupe. The training also involves periodic
concerts to encourage youngsters.
