'Popcorn' by Bangalore Little Theatre

A scene from the play: Bruce Delamitri, Carl Brezner and Velvet, Bruce's daughterBangalore Little Theatre
presented 'Popcorn', a production promoted by Kshitij, a non-profit making association dedicated to the promotion of the performing arts in Bangalore. Popcorn was an action packed thriller comedy by the award-winning playwright, Ben Elton.

The play unfolded with the celebrated Hollywood director Bruce Delamitri cast in the Quentin Tarantino/Oliver Stone mould, returning home from thPopcorn's caste Oscars ceremony with Playboy model Brooke Daniels to an evening he would never have envisaged. Not even in his wildest dreams. A classic case of life imitating art or is it the other way around? The play was trademark Elton with the playwright at his black-comedic best: biting satire and a refreshingly different topical theme, although traditionalists were advised that the language was fairly explicit. Consequently, parents were advised that the play would not be suitable for children below sixteen years.

The cast read like a Who's Who of Bangalore's theatre personalities with Geoff Downer, Judith Roby BiBruce Delamitri, Velvet and Sarah, Bruce's wife dapa, Priscilla Corner, Anil Menon and Harathi Reddy essaying the lead roles. The play was directed by columnist and theatre personality Ajit Saldanha whose directorial credits include 'Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf' and 'Little Malcolm'. The sets for the production were designed and executed by Shashi Adappa with costumes by Vidya Appiah and Hidden Harmony, lighting by Pradeep Belawadi and properties handled by Veena.

Ample car parking was available at the venue, which was conveniently located and could be approached from either Sankey Road or C.V. Raman Avenue.

The play was staged at the J.N.Tata Auditorium, Indian Institute of Science from February 19 to 21, 2001
