Globe trotting Sekhar Roy's solo exhibition of his works
atCrimson Art Gallery, Safina Plaza, displayed canvas works
as well as paintings on wood. The exhibition was held in the
last week of January 2001. All Roy's works were framed in an
innovative style, matching the artist's unique method.
Roy is not new to Bangalore as he has already participated in
many group shows conducted in the city galleries like Chitrakala
Parishat. As far as his individual shows are concerned, it was
Roy's third individual show in India and the first one in Bangalore,
he told bangalorebest.com
Peter, a senior British contemporary painter, is Sekhar Roy's
role model. "I start to paint on canvas without any particular
idea. My work starts as an abstract form and then that abstract
form itself teaches me what form I should create next. That
is how I work. Every time I start there is no pre-plan. The
canvas itself guides me," Roy says. He keenly observes things
around him and this spills over into his creations.
Does he convey any message through his works? "I do not
think you
could force a message into your work; then it does not stay
a painting. Art should be its own message. I would much rather
work on and develop my originality, the style that defines me.
Which was his first art show? There was a time for
Roy when "the financial scenario was not very bright. I could
not afford a canvas. So all my works would be black and white
drawings, done in charcoal……. So when I could finally buy a
canvas, I did my metamorphosis series. That was my first show,
at the Academy of Fine Arts in Calcutta," Sekhar Roy recalls.
Colours he uses most: Deep brown or mauve, deep green, and
colours of the evening or twilight.
