Vibrant
colours, forceful strokes, abstract figures evoking various
feelings, words that normally describe a painter's style. So
what was so special about the painting exhibition being
held at Kannada Bhavan on J C Road last August? It
was the age of the artist that evoked surprise.
Four year old Lakshmishri exhibited her 50 enchanting
works done over the last two years. A student of the local
Bethesda school in Kumarapark West, she looks like any ordinary
kid. But when she wields the brush, she is a different person.
Bright yellow, crimson red, deep purple, vivid green - all strong
colours are her favourites. Her preference is for poster
colour medium and she loves to use the spray gun.
Her father A G K Jayaprakash is an architect and interior
designer who has always been fascinated by fine arts. Lakshmishri
would watch her father working on his layouts and diagrams.
But what is amazing is the way she picked up the skill of spray
painting and now uses complex elements. When she was two years
old, Lakshmishri joined a playhome and during craft classes
she displayed enormous dexterity in using colours.
Her
father feels that she has a very keen colour sense and in all
her works the colours blend harmoniously. She uses various
techniques in one painting. She begins with a few drops
of colour on paper, then paper pieces are cut in a design and
stuck on the surface and then sprayed with an airbrush. She
uses various objects like scissors, leaf, or crepe paper
to get a shadow effect on the artwork, a technique she learnt
by watching her father do his perspective landscapes. Jayaprakash
says, "She often watches me. And when I ask her, she says, 'I
will watch you now, later you will be watching me work'. "
A friendly child who enjoys school, she loves to play and is
many a time distracted from her work when she sees her friends
playing. Her teacher says her handwriting is the best, which
might be the side effect of her painting work. At home when
she is alone, she likes to play with building blocks and jigsaw
puzzles. Strangely, she doesn't follow a pattern in joining
the pieces of the puzzle. For her colour is the clue and she
looks for similar colours in the pieces.
Apart
from painting she has an inclination to music and dance also.
Whenever she watches a violin recital on TV, she is enthralled
and demands that her father buy her a violin. She also loves
to watch cartoons, nature and wildlife programmes. Her fascination
with nature shows in her paintings. Often, while merely sketching
with a pen or pencil, she draws animal characters and tree life.
Such tender talent surely merits encouragement.
