The age-old cold war between mom-in-law and daughter-in-law
is coming to an end. Traditional domestic equations have changed
as mothers-in-law begin to appreciate their newly self-confident
daughters-in-law.
Vying for a perfect relationship with her seven daughters-in-law,
this mother-in-law tried to reach for the stars. And today,
Amba Bai has become one herself after becoming the All
India winner of 'Vimal Mother-in-law 2000' contest in
Bangalore.
More than 200 mothers-in-law, whose names were registered by
their loved daughters-in-law, participated in the contest. The
contest was organized by the Guild of Women Achievers and
sponsored by Reliance Industries Limited. The contest
was based upon an open interaction between MIL and DIL, their
frank and forthright experiences. Bangalore seemed to have many
competent moms-in-law as there were many award winners from
the city.
Bangalorebest.com spoke to the proud winner of the competition
Mrs. Amba Bai, a 92-year-old mother-in-law of seven daughters-in-law
and found that this elderly lady knows the secret of maintaining
a happy family:
On how she manages all her seven daughters-in-law, she says,
"God has given me a sound and sensible head and that is
the reason I have been living happily with my daughters-in-law."
Her precious advice to all mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law
is "Stay as you would want to be, never interfere in each
other's business unnecessarily. Always remember you were also
a daughter-in-law and your daughter-in-law will become a mother-in-law
one day. So you reap what you sow."
On
the joint family system "It used to be very nice when we
all stayed together, but of late all my daughters-in-law have
shifted to different houses because of scarcity of space here
and also employment opportunities. But even today, all of them
come to meet me on Sundays without fail and spend the whole
day here. It is such a festive occasion then!"
Her advice to a young girl, about to get married is "Take
our huge family as an example; adjust and learn to carry yourself
well to lead a peaceful life."
About her most difficult situation with her daughters-in-law
till date, she says " I never had any kind of major problems
with my daughters-in-law and I am sure, they will also give
you the same feed-back. I have always treated them all as my
own daughters. Today, we are a family of 50 members and we all
live very peacefully, without any problems."
The bottom-line of the story is 'Swalpa adjust maadi, mattey
maja nodi'! Life is full of adjustments, so why not compromise
a little to lead a happy, tension-free life.
