The
colourful mirrorwork embroidery of Rajasthan is well known.
But much less is known of its delicate porcelainware. Lovely
porcelainware from this distant desert land have many takers
in the city.
Porcelain is made up of natural clay, fire baked and sometimes
coated with a substance called glaze. Bangalore has a few of
these makers of fine porcelain from Rajasthan who migrated to
Karnataka nearly fifteen years ago. They get the raw materials
from Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh and make artistic flowerpots,
vases, and stands, pickle containers and toys of varying sizes.
R A Gulshan Lama who sells these items says, "The paint over
porcelainware remains unspoiled even after 100 years because
the paint is heated and then utilized." "These pots are handmade.
No machinery is used either in making,
designing or coloring of these porcelain items", says another
seller Koshal Lama. He recollects how a customer bought large
quantities of their porcelainware and sold them in the USA.
"We find more buyers in Bangalore than in other cities and the
climate here is very nice," adds another seller. These beautiful
porcelain items cost between Rs. 25 to 2500. They also undertake
orders. Surely this lovely porcelainware could find a place
in your home.
