You'll find them and much more on Meenakshi Koil Street in
Shivajinagar. On this busy street one can find a baffling variety
of items on sale, from vegetables to showcase pieces. Another advantage
is its proximity to Commercial Street, another popular shopping point
in the city.
Meenakshi Koil Street starts from the Shivajinagar Stadium and
leads via the Saint Mary's Basilica Church, Russel Market, and the
Meenakshi Koil temple and meets the Juma Masjid Road. The Russel
Market is situated to the left of Meenakshi Koil Street
and opposite the Saint Mary's Basilica Church. It is one of
the oldest markets in the city and was a popular shopping hub even
during the days of the British Raj, when Englishmen and army personnel
settled in the Cantonment area came here regularly. Russel Market
is not just a meat market but it also supplies vegetables, fruits,
flowers and other food products.
 Stand
at one point on this street and view the bamboo cane items on display
at innumerable shops. They literally spill over on to the street.
These include sofas, beds, rocking chairs, centre tables, beautifully
crafted baskets and walking sticks.
And this is the street for aquariums. Watching bright coloured fish
leisurely winding their way through the water can lessen stress. Just
what the doctor would recommend for our fast paced city lives. On
Meenakshi Koil Street you will find aquariums in different
sizes with a variety of colourful aquarium fish. The two shops that
stock these aquariums are packed with customers at all hours. Until
recently even the State Government aquarium in Cubbon Park did not
sell aquariums and hence those who wanted to buy either aquarium fish
or its accessories had to come here. Bharath Aquarium is one of the
oldest shops selling all kinds of ornamental fish since 1954.
 The
Proprietor of Bharath Aquarium, Abdul Raheem told Bangalorebest.com
that they sell all kinds of "silicon tanks, air-pumps, aquatic
plants and other aquarium accessories" to the customers. According
to him, anybody who wants to start an aquarium has to buy a glass
tank, gravels, water plants, oxygen air pump, filter, ornamental fish
and lighting equipment. The water should be replaced every 15 days
and fresh fish feed should be fed to the fish, he added. The prices
of the aquariums vary according to the size. Small aquariums cost
Rs 350 and large ones cost between a few hundred rupees to thousands
of rupees.
