Bangalore, Asia's fastest growing city, has a dynamic mix of fascinating
history and a global techno culture. The pace of change has been incredible
- but some things just don't change. Brigade Road, MG Road and
Commercial Street are three of Bangalore's most popular areas
for shopping, for having a fun-time, and for high-tech work places.
Brigade
Road is a popular hangout for people - young and old, because
there are a lot of entertainment and shopping outlets. 'Rex',
situated on this road, is one of the oldest and best movie theatres.
There is a Cyber Café, G's lanes bowling alley and Headquarters,
a virtual games parlour. For the hungry connoisseur there is the cosy
The Only Place which serves great steaks and desserts. The
multinational fast-food giant KFC has an outlet on this road
and it is popular among the young crowd. Quality food lovers can shop
at the renowned departmental store Nilgiri's which also has
a restaurant. There are showrooms for brands like Lee, Van Heusen,
Louis Phillippe, Nike, Adidas and Dockers. Apart from the
genuine branded goods, you can even buy a lot of unbranded clothes,
shoes and junk jewellery. Fifth Avenue and Mota Royal Arcade
are shopping malls worth exploring.
MG
Road or Mahatma Gandhi Road is a another popular road.
During the British Raj it was called 'South Parade Road'. The
Miss Universe 2000, Lara Dutta was taken on a motorcade
ride on this road. There are a large number of sari stores, like Deepam,
Vijayalakshmi and Nalli Silks. There are two movie theatres
- Plaza and Shankarnag Chitra Mandira (Symphony).
'Barton Centre' is a well known business and shopping arcade with
'Navrathan Jewellers' next door. Gangaram is one of the biggest bookstores
in Bangalore. Those who are looking for good cutlery will find Jamal's
a wonderful place. Bangalore's tallest structure 'Utility Building'
is located here. It houses 'Ebony and Top Kapi',
two sky-high restaurants, one on the 13th floor and the other on the
24th floor. There is 'Lakeview', the all time favourite ice-cream
house. And here's the best part - M.G. Road is right next to Brigade
Road! So have fun!
Commercial
Street is more of a shopping area with very few entertainment
joints. You can buy the trendiest clothes, jewellery and footwear
here. Trousseau shoppers will find 'Tamana' and 'Hareems'
just ideal for bridal-wear. C. Krishniah Chetty and Sons (CKC)
is famous for diamond and gold jewellery. 'Woody's serves good
South Indian food. For net nerds there is Coffee Day where
you can surf the net while enjoying different kinds of coffee with
sandwiches, pizzas and pies. It is a nice place for a date too! The
'Taj Cake Shop' with its pastries, cakes and breads, is located
right next to Natural's, an ice cream parlour. Explore the
side lanes too; you might stumble upon some choice garment or footware
which may be less expensive, especially if they are unbranded. They
aren't of particularly high quality, but sometimes you might find
really good stuff!
