Madhyam
is a development communications organisation which explores
the interface between communication, culture, media and development.
It was started in 1983 with the intention of creating public
awareness and attitudinal change on issues related to women,
children and other marginalised groups. To this effect, Madhyam
develops communication materials in the form of films, posters,
journals, audio cassettes and offers training programmes and
consultations. Madhyam believes that change is nesessary and
possible at every level in society and uses both mainstream
and alternative media, towards this effort.
Primary Objectives
To fulfill the communication needs of groups and non-governmental
organisations engaged in social action.
To reflect concerns on issues related to the oppression
of women and children, tribals and
caste-class injustice.
Encouraging and preserving tribal and folk art forms and
their use for
cultural action.
Production of communication materials including posters,
audio-visuals
and films.
Training and support of cultural action and social groups.
Working with media persons as partners in change.
Production of Resource Material
Madhyam
has produced journals, films, audio-cassettes and posters. Their
periodical journal 'Madhyam' examines issues in communication,
development and culture by experts in the field. The journal
acts as a platform for diverse opinions and seeks to bring about
change at policy level. The films produced and presented by
Madhyam reach out to a vast spectrum of people. The organization
has been commissioned by the Doordarshan's National Network
to produce four segments as part of a women's video magazine,
SAMPARK, on widows, child sexual abuse, women in Panchayati
Raj in Karnataka and Herbal Health systems. Posters in both
Kannada and English are available on the themes of Women in
Religion, AIDS and Child Rights.
Video Resource Library
The video resource library was set up in 1989 to facilitate
the work of social groups. It provides access to a wide range
of films that deal with various issues, like violence against
women, child development, environment, education and social
movements by reputed documentary film makers. These films can
be viewed at screenings organized by Madhyam or can be hired
for a nominal sum. A catalogue of the films is available at
Madhyam.
