Children
are filled with laughter, smiles, dreams, love, innocence and
happiness. But most children who are lonely and helpless are
not fortunate enough to have them and these children's anguished
cries are answered by SOS Children's Villages of India,
who lend a helping hand by giving these destitute children a
family, permanent home, strong foundation and a secure life.
SOS Children's Villages of India is a voluntary childcare organization.
It has provided direct and indirect care for more than 2,00,000
children in India. Moved by the plight of children left homeless
after the Second World War in 1949, the SOS founder Dr Hermann
Gmeiner visualized the SOS concept. His visionary approach
of giving the child in need, love and nurturing in a family
environment has proved both practical and widely successful
and now it has spread to 132 countries.
In
India it was started in 1964 by Padmashri Award winner Shri
J.N Kaul, a great visionary at 'Greenfields' at Faridabad.
There are presently 32 SOS Children's Villages throughout the
country.
The SOS Children's Village of India, Bangalore is situated
on the Bannerghatta Road. It has a well-maintained,
beautiful and serene campus consisting of around 20 houses.
M.K Lokesh, Director, SOS Children's Village of India,
Bangalore is in charge of the village and is helped by a team
of co-workers to run the administration, guide and help the
mothers and children.
The moth er
is appointed by SOS and is trained and later she voluntarily
takes responsibility of looking after 10-12 children. She takes
care of all their needs - cooking for them, sharing their joy
and sorrows. These mothers are supported and helped by an efficient
team of trained co-workers who reside in the same campus. These
mothers are paid and each house has specific amount of money
fixed for expenditure according to the number of children staying
in each house. As the children grow up boys move to youth hostels
maintained by SOS Children Villages but the girls stay back
at the village till they settle down. Mr. Mahesh M.V is the
incharge of these youth hostels.
The
village is a permanent home to which the children often return
even after beginning independent lives. Through its SOS mother
the child learns what love and security means. Today many of
the SOS children are holding responsible jobs, some married
and living on their own.
SOS Children's Village of India is involved in other projects
which includes Schools, Vocational Training Centres, Social
and Medical centres at villages where even the people of that
village can avail the facility.
