Tel Nek

The Head of Delegation of the European Commission in India, Ambassador Michel Calliouet, visited the Tel-Nek Ramanagaram project being implemented in the town of Bidadi near Bangalore on 28th May. Tel-Nek is a 24 month long programme where underprivileged women will be trained in IT and its instruction. The trainees are also provided with practical on-hand experience in teaching New Information and Communication Technologies (NICT).

These plans include the provision of micro-credits for the funding of community-generated projects. The project aims at providing training in the new information and communication technologies in semi rural areas focussing on the empowerment of women through technical education and support. The project is a showcase of the collaboration of European and Indian organisations working together to provide new opportunities to the under privileged sections of the society. The organisations include the Association of Electronics and Information Technology, Industries of the Basque country, Spain, Software Service Support for Europe and India and three Indian NGOs Samuha, Suvidya and Anchorage.

"This project is an example of the collaboration possible between Indian and European organisations in new technologies for the benefit of weaker sections of society. It is in line with the spirit of the first ever EU India Summit which took place in Lisbon in June 2000, at which the leaders agreed to work closely with each other in sectors such as Information Technology, Telecommunications and Biotechnology" which have a vast potential to improve the standards of living and quality of life for our citizens" said Michel Calliouet addressing the press at Bidadi.
