The Wheelchair Bank at Mobility India in Jayanagar, Bangalore, offers good quality, foldable wheelchairs and even an accessible van on hire to people. If needed, the wheelchair can be delivered at your doorstep.

It is estimated that there are more than 9.6 million people in India affected by loco-motor disabilities. Most require some sort of mobility assistance, however only 5% of this group have access to some kind of mobility aids. It was to address this problem that Mobility India was established in 1994 under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act. Mobility India provides support services mainly to Non Governmental Organisations, which have a base in rural areas and urban slums. Their services include support to set up new orthopaedic workshops or develop existing workshops, train technicians to run the workshop, research and development, networking and advocacy.

Workshops conducted by Mobility IndiaProgramme Manager at Mobility India, Mahesh told bangalorebest.com that ordinary foldable wheelchairs are available for Rs 200 (weekly) and Rs 600 (monthly), and deluxe foldable wheelchairs for Rs 250 (weekly) and Rs 800 (monthly). However a deposits of Rs 5,000 and 6,500 for ordinary and deluxe foldable wheelchairs respectively will be collected by Mobility India from the customers.

Vision, Aims and Objectives of Mobility India
To increase awareness of, need for, and benefit of mobility and rehabilitation aid.
To create rehabilitation aid and appliances with Physiotherapy facilities in rural areas.
To promote appropriate technology, with a focus on Community Based Rehabilitation.
To promote simple therapeutic techniques to prevent/correct deformities and avoid surgery wherever possible.
To conduct Research and Development of appropriate mobility aids and therapeutic technique.
To initiate and participate in advocacy programmes to ensure equal rights for people with disability.
To network with Government and Non Governmental Organisations for the larger benefit of people with disability.

Fitting a Jaipur footMobility India has its resource centre and its main office in Bangalore. The centre comprises of 4 technical units, an administrative unit, fund raising and communications unit. Of the 23 staff members, 2 are volunteers from VSO, 11 are women and 7 persons have personal experience of disability. Besides the staff, Mobility India board members also play an active role when required. All the seven board members have vast experience in disability and they come from different parts of the country. Among the seven, three board members have personal experience of disability and four are women. The Bangalore centre supports 18 organisations in four states.
