Anjolie
Ela Menon is one amongst India's most respected artists
and intellectuals of the art world. Born in 1940, Anjolie
studied English Literature at Delhi University after which
she went to the JJ School of Art, Mumbai. Thereafter, in 1961,
she went on to work and study in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux
Arts on a French Government scholarship.
Anjolie
has lived and worked in England, the United States, Germany
and the former USSR. She has had over forty solo shows in
India and abroad to date. In addition to paintings in private
and corporate art collections, her works have been acquired
by museums in India and abroad.
Menon
has also represented India at several Biennales. She has been
invited by the British Council, the US State Department and
the French Ministry of Culture to confer with leading artists
of these countries. She has served on the Advisory
Committee and the Art Purchase Committee of the National Gallery
for Modern Art, New Delhi and co-curated with Henri Claude
Cousseau, a major exhibition of French contemporary art.
A trustee of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts,
Menon is considered one of the foremost Indian artists of
our times in recognition of which she has been awarded the
Padmashree.
A retrospective exhibition of her work was held at Mumbai,
Bangalore, Chennai and New Delhi earlier in the year.
