An interview with Prof.
K E Radhakrishna
Prof.
K E Radhakrishna, eminent educationist and Principal
of Sheshadripuram College, Bangalore, is one of the members
of the trust constituted to spend the one million dollars
donated by NRI B V Jagdeesh to the Bangalore Mahanagara
Palike (BMP) schools. Prof. Radhakrishna emphatically advocated
the establishment of a Research and Development (R and D)
Cell exclusively for updating school and college syllabi
on the lines of Indian Institute of Science. This, he said,
would improve the quality of Indian education.
What is your opinion about the existing syllabi at the school
and college level?
Knowledge is growing fast and education should reflect this.
Concerned educational bodies should discuss the syllabus and
come to a consensus. An R and D Cell should be formulated
solely to work on the formation and updating of syllabi and
to continuously give the latest inputs in all fields of education
- technical, academic, Information Technology studies.
What about the maintenance of discipline in your school
and college considering such a large number of students in each
class room?
The majority of our students are basically disciplined and we
do not face any problems on that front. Our teachers maintain
their classes well.
Though degree holders are specialised in a particular field,
they end up with a job not connected to their subjects. Your
comment please.
The purpose of a degree in any field is to acquire basic
knowledge, technical skills and value based education.
We are lagging far behind in skill-training for a particular
job. Basic knowledge is quite adequate but value education is
debatable. In India, degrees are still a status symbol due to
so many social reasons. Many people obtain a degree just to
show it on their wedding invitation. Considering the present
social situation, this trend may continue for a few more years.
But a change is slowly taking place.
How is the fund donated by B V Jagadeesh going to be spent
on the BMP schools in the city?
B V Jagadeesh is an old student of our college. We are
proud of him for having donated so generously to BMP schools.
BMP schools are the best in having well paid teachers, spacious
buildings and premises when compared to many private schools.
But there is lack of enrolment of students due to societal non-acceptance.
Motivation to the teachers in BMP schools is very low. We will
take up the task of motivation for all BMP school teachers through
subject up-gradation, HRD (Human Resource Development) training
and computer based training. We are confident that three years
from now we will bring social acceptance to all BMP schools
in the city.
What is the secret of your being one of the longest serving
principals of your college?
There is no secret at all. I love my students. I am friendly
with my colleagues. And more over I have got a definite vision
of what I should do.
