S M Krishna
S
M Krishna became the President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress
Committee (I) in February 1999, at a time when the Party in
Karnataka was in a disorganized state without able leadership.
He re-united the party despite many hurdles within his party.
In the elections held in 1999, the Congress fared well and
S M Krishna became the Chief Minister of Karnataka
on October11, 1999.
An IT savvy Chief Minister, Krishna is striving to
retain Karnataka's place as the IT leader among the Indian
states and other Asian countries. He has taken keen interest
in attracting foreign capitalists and Multi National Companies
to set up establishments in the state. As of today, he is
one among the many stalwarts of the Congress party at the
national level as well. This soft-spoken yet dynamic leader,
who has always preferred to keep a low profile, is a force
to reckon with in today's unified Congress in the state.
S M Krishna was born on May 1, 1932 at Somanahally in
the district of Mandya. He graduated from the Government Law
College, Bangalore. Then he went abroad to continue his studies
at the Southern Methodist University, Dallas, U.S.A, and the
George Washington University, U.S.A. After his formal education,
Krishna has held various positions. Before his entry into
the political arena, he was a Professor of International Law,
SJR Law College, Bangalore, for a period of six years, from
1962-68. At the State level, so far, he has served as the
Speaker, Deputy Chief Minister and has held important portfolios
in the State ministry.
Nowadays, as Chief Minister, with his busy schedule, S
M Krishna may not find time to pursue one of his interests
- designing men's clothes. He loves to play Tennis and practices
Yoga too. He is the president of the Karnataka State Lawn
Tennis Association. His extensive travels around the world
have helped him hone his skills. At the helm of the government
today, he has plans to make Karnataka one of the best administered
states in the country.
