The
Vidhana Soudha, that houses the State Secretariat and
the Legislative Assembly was built. Kengal Hanumanthaiah,
Chief Minister of Mysore State between 1951-1956 was responsible
for the concept, the structure and the setting of the
building. Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of
India, laid the foundation stone for the building.

Bangalore went on air with the commissioning of a Radio
Transmitter in the city on 2nd November, 1955.

Bangalore became the capital of Greater Mysore State.
This State was formed by uniting all the Kannada speaking
areas according to the linguistic basis of the States
Reorganisation Act of 1956

The
Industrial townships of HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited),
BEL (Bharat Electronics Limited), HMT (Hindustan Machine
Tools) and ITI (Indian Telephone Industries) were built.

To boost electronic industries in the state, The Karnataka
State Electronics Development Corp (Keonics) was set up.

Bangalore sets up its own TV station on the 1st of November.

The new General Post Office building, with its grand-entrance
and imposing columns of classical design was inaugurated
in 1985 on Raj Bhavan Road.

Bangalore became the first city in the country to introduce
the "Yellow Pages" concept that was already famous worldwide.

| The Ministry of Information
Technology starts the first Software Technology Parks
of India (STPI). |

A politically and culturally landmarked year for Bangalore:
Bangalore played host to the Miss World Beauty pageant,
the first time it was held in India and Shri H.D. Deve
Gowda from Bangalore became the Prime Minister of India,
another first for Bangalore and Karnataka.

Bangalore went mobile by introducing the first
Cellular Phone Services by AirTel.
On 31st May, ISKON's world famous Sri Krishna Balram Temple
was inaugurated by Shri Shankar Dayal Sharma, the then
President of India.
On the same day the 4th National Games was inaugurated
at the newly constructed Kanteerava Indoor Stadium at
Koramangala.

Bandit Veerapan held the states of Karnataka and Tamil
Nadu to ransom by kidnapping Dr. Rajkumar.
Sirsi Flyover was opened to public to reduce the traffic
from some of the major bottle-necks in the city. |

The
most loved and admired actor Dr. Rajkumar passes away
on the April 12. He died just 12 days before his 77th
Birthday. The news causes stir in the state leading
to riots and chaos for three days at a stretch.
Th state adopts new names for the cities in Karnataka:
Bangalore is re-named as Bengalooru.
Mysore becomes Mysooru.
Belgaum is now called as Belgavi.

The BJP and JD(S) political drama turns ugly. Ex-Chief
Minister HD Kumaraswamy acts according to his fathers
guidance Ex-Prime Minister/Chief Minister Deve Gowda
and betrays his political ally BS Yeddyurappa. The 20
months old coalition breaks leading to President's rule
in the state. With lot of tug war between MLAs, BJP
forms government for the first time in the state in
a new arrangement with JD (S). The re-union lasts for
a week and BJP government with BS Yeddyurappa as CM
ends. The President's rule is re-insated for the second
time.
