- Tipu Sultan
Tipu Sultan,
popularly known as " The Tiger of Mysore" is an important
figure in the history of Mysore. He and his father, Haider
Ali struggled to expel the British out of this region. The
British feared Tipu more than any other ruler of this region.
He was well read, knew about scientific developments, happenings
around the world and introduced novelty and invention in all
spheres. He had a curious mind and a great love for reading.
His library contained about 2000 books in various languages.
As his main aim was to strengthen his military power and
oust the British out of country, he founded a huge ordinance
factory at Devanahalli. At Bangalore, rockets were manufactured
and stored at Taramandalpet (Kalasipalya today). The
armoury still exists next to Bangalore Medical College.
He
imprisoned British Military Officers in the dark cells at Bangalore
Fort and Srirangapatna. Along with his father he developed Lalbagh
by getting rare varieties of plants from other countries.
Haider Ali began the construction of a palace in Bangalore in
1781 but died in 1782.Tipu Sultan continued his father's work
and completed the construction in 1791. It was described as
an "Abode of Happiness and Envy of Heaven".
Tipu was a soldier to the core, and he faced death in the
battle field on 4th May 1799, fighting against the British in
Srirangapatna. The bicentenary of his death was observed in
