The 3rd annual exhibition of Ornamental Fish was held at the
Government Aquarium in May 2000. Amity Aquatech from Cochin
and Southern India Aquarists from Chennai presented an exquisite
collection of the most colourful and attractive ornamental fish
from all parts of India. Prizes were awarded in three categories
- hobby fish keeping, commercial fish keeping and best-kept
stall. The award for the last category is a rolling trophy.
Keeping fish as pets is slowly but steadily gaining immense
popularity among all age groups. Watching the movements of these
brightly coloured fish under water in the midst of green vegetation
attracts the attention of young and old. Ornamental fish keeping
is relatively less expensive in comparison to keeping other
pets. The hobby, which started with the gold fish in small glass
bowls, has now reached a stage wherein one can find a variety
of fish in huge aquariums with modern gadgets like air pumps,
filters and aqua-accessories. The fish with their curious habits,
delightful colours and movements are known to provide relaxation
to the mind when one
requires mental peace.
The Government Aquarium also houses the Aquarists Society of
Karnataka, which is the principal organiser of these exhibitions
annually. One can become a member of the society and gain access
to their magazine and other benefits offered by them. In case
you have missed out on the exhibition, there is also a collection
of fish for sale in the premises throughout the year. They also
deal in fish tanks, food and other accessories like heaters,
pumps, etc. For more information about the society, log onto
