Apart
from Independence Day celebrations, the month of August holds
another important event for the Bangaloreans - the Lalbagh horticulture
show. There is no year in exception. The show kicks off on 15th
of August. The sky, bright and blue with little specks of cloud
scattered all over and the air crisp and heavy with the scent
of various flowers and plants. It is a riot of colours - the
different hues of flowers mingling with the colourful attires
of the people who throngs the place to catch a glimpse of different
flowers exhibited in the show.
Apart from exhibition of potted plants, a variety of cut flower
arrangements,Ike-Bana, Bonsai, different kinds of fruits and
vegetables carvings is also on display.
The
Lalbagh Horticulture Show can be traced back to the year
1922. G. H. Krumbiegal, the then Superintendent of Lalbagh
established the Mysore Horticultural Society and since then
it has been conducting two horticulture shows every year. Initially,
one is held in the summer and is called the Summer Show
and the other held in the winter and is called the Winter
Show. It was only from 1951, that the authorities started
conducting the shows in the months of January and August to
synchronize with the Republic Day and Independence Day.
In this show, a garden competition is also conducted and various
government
and public sector organizations like DRDO, ISRO, HAL, ITI (Electronic
City), BEML, HMT, Wheel and Axle, Bangalore Mahanagara Palike
etc, private organizations and multinationals, horticultural
and allied institutions such as Department of Horticulture,
University of Agricultural Sciences, Spices Board, Coffee Board,
etc., participate in the competition. Over the years, a new
awakening has been created in the minds of the participants
and many competitors participate in the show by exhibiting quality
fruits, flowers, vegetables, etc.
This kind of horticultural show infuses a new interest about
plants and flowers
among people and encourages them to develop ornamental and kitchen
gardens.
Besides organizing flower shows twice a year, the Mysore
Horticultural Society, in co-ordination with the Department
of Horticulture also conducts training programmes on Ike-Bana,
Indian Floral Art, Vegetable Carving, etc. Beside these, the
authorities also plan to start a training programme on Dry flower
arrangement from September.
