GULBARGA

Gulbarga is one of those
places that still retains its old world charm. Bahman Shah on ascending
the throne of Daulatabad chose Gulbarga as his capital. He filled
it with beautiful mosques, stately buildings and bazaars.

HAMPI:
Hampi was once the glorious capital of the mighty Vijayanagar Empire
(1336 - 1565). The Vijayanagar kings were great
patrons of art and architecture as is evident from the vast ruins
in Hampi. In an effort to resurrect this abandoned capital, the
government
has been involved in the restoration, excavation and protection
of the ruins, which spread over an area of 26 sq.km. The terrain
is dominated by rocky hills and the mighty Tungabhadra river which
flows through this rugged landscape. A suggestion to travellers
is to make Hospet your base as the facilities offered there are
better.

By Road: Buses ply regularly from Hospet to Hampi. Hampi is
11 km from Hospet 350 km from Bangalore.
By Rail: Hospet is connected by rail to Bellary (61 km away).

The nearest airport is Belgaum.
PATTADAKAL
The tiny village of Pattadakal is situated on the banks of the Malaprabha
river. King Vikramaditya II (734 - 745 AD) and his art loving queens
Lokmahadevi and Trailkyamahadevi, brought sculptors from Kanchipuram
to create fantasies in stone at Pattadakal.
There are ten major temples representing early Chalukyan architecture,
the biggest temple being dedicated to Virupaksha. The Mallikarjuna
and the Papanatha temples are worth a visit. Pattadakal also has a
Jain temple.
This place is
now a world heritage centre. Interestingly, Ptolemy has referred
to Pattadakal as Petrigal. Pattadakal was later known variously
as Raktapura (Red Town) and Pattadakal Kisuvolal. Visitors will
have to locate themselves at Bijapur (161 km) or Badami.
