This
hill with the Chamundeshwari Temple is a must for those with religious
fervor as well as those who appreciate scenic beauty. The ride uphill
gives tantalising glimpses of Mysore city and once atop, the breeze
(be wise and venture up towards evening) sends chills down the spine!
Could this be due to a feeling of deja vu?! One of the educational
displays at the Godly Museum (on top of the hill) states that "5000
years ago at this time you had visited this place in the same way
you are visiting now. Because world drama repeats itself identically
every 5000 years"!
The twelfth-century temple houses the Chamundeshwari idol which is
solid gold. Ouside, in the courtyard, stands a fearsome, if gaily
coloured, statue of the demon Mahishasura, who was slain by Chamundeshwari.
Along the path downwards, don't miss the detour to see the magnificent
five-metre Nandi that was carved from a single piece of black-granite
in 1659. One can climb up the Chamundi hill using the thousand steps
provided for the purpose. This pathway is lighted at night and looks
wonderful when seen from the city.
