Besides
Pubs, Discos, IT and Parks, Bangalore is famous for one more
thing - Lakes. Of the many that existed a century ago in this
city, only a few remain today. And one of them is the Sankey
Tank. Located near the Vyali Kaval Circle, Sadashivanagar,
this is one of the State Government protected lakes.
Both tourists and residents of Bangalore, especially people
from the sorrounding localities of Malleshwaram,
Sadashivanagar, and Vyali Kaval, find this a serene and scenic
place to visit. One of the major attraction here is the boating
facility available. The different type of boats available
here are - Row Boats, Pedal Boats and Motor Boats - one can
hire a boat and go to the mini-forest, located on island,
in the middle of the lake. One can spend a whole day on this
island and very often, picnickers are found doing just that.
While the gardens sorrounding the tank are under the direct
purview of the Horticulture
Department, the Lake itself is being taken care of by the
Department of Tourism, Karnataka. Following the death of many
of Bangalore's beautiful lakes, stringent measures have been
taken to prevent dumping of garbage and other non-biodegradable
waste. Security personnel have been appointed to check littering
in and around this area. Fishing is also strictly prohibited
in the Lake. The main pollutant, the personnel there say,
happens during the Ganesha Festival when idols of Ganesha
are immersed in the water. The Inner Wheel Club of Bangalore
is also taking keen initiative in increasing public awareness
about the repercussions of polluting the lake through hoardings
and other mediums which carry meaningful messages.
There is also a swimming centre within the lake which
is open from 6 am to 5 pm on all days except on Friday, which
is the weekly holiday. It is closed between 10 am and 12 noon
every day. There is a separate batch for ladies from 3:30
pm to 4:30 pm. The entry is Rs 10/- for adults and Rs 5/-
for children.
So what are you waiting for - plan your next picnic to Sankey
