Despite losing its sheen in the recent past, the Congress
Party is still a name to reckon with. It still has
one of the largest grassroots worker network and organization
resources. So, when it is a Congress plenary session,
it has to be on a mega scale. After 41 years, Bangalore
played host to the 81st three-day All India Congress
Committee (AICC) plenary session, from March 17-19,
2001.
The AICC's 65th plenary session was held in Bangalore
in 1960 when former Vice-President B D Jatti was Karnataka's
chief minister. The venue was the erstwhile Mysore
Maharaja's garden, which is now named Sadashivanagar.
This time the plenary session was inside Palace Grounds
and a huge canopy was erected. More than 10,000 delegates
converged at the grounds, which was renamed 'Rajiv
Gandhi Nagar'.
