Mammoth Party- Mega Session

Click on the pictures below for an enlarged view

Despite losing its sheen in the recent past, the Congress Party is still a name to reckon with. It still has one of the largest grassroots worker network and organization resources. So, when it is a Congress plenary session, it has to be on a mega scale. After 41 years, Bangalore played host to the 81st three-day All India Congress Committee (AICC) plenary session, from March 17-19, 2001.

The AICC's 65th plenary session was held in Bangalore in 1960 when former Vice-President B D Jatti was Karnataka's chief minister. The venue was the erstwhile Mysore Maharaja's garden, which is now named Sadashivanagar. This time the plenary session was inside Palace Grounds and a huge canopy was erected. More than 10,000 delegates converged at the grounds, which was renamed 'Rajiv Gandhi Nagar'.

The first lady of the city welcomes the most sought after lady… Mayor Prema Cariappa welcomes Congress President Sonia Gandhi into the city by offering the traditional Mysore Peta and badge.

The Mayor Prema Cariappa, Chief Minister S M Krishna and Sonia Gandhi at the inauguration of the statue of Rajiv Gandhi in Seshadripuram.

The past and the present… huge banners of Gandhi and Nehru look down on present day leaders at the inaugural session of the 81st plenary session of AICC.

The only relic of the freedom struggle is the Gandhi Topi and Khadi Kurtha… Congress workers in sparkling white uniform turn up for the flag hoist at the AICC plenary session.

And the future… Rajiv was a leader who always stressed on the need to empower the youth who will be responsible citizens of the future.
