TVS Motor and BMW are partnering to roll out a 310 cc bike in 2016-17. This will be a global high for the Indian major. Its German collaborator will sell the product globally. TVS’ Hosur plant will be the exclusive manufacturing base for the model billed as BMW’s first sub-500cc bike.
TVS, which has played a key part in developing the bike, feels the relationship is a testimony to the company’s focus on quality , value engineering and a deeprooted supplier base.
The `TVS-Akula 310′ is on display at the Auto Expo. BMW Motorrad too has showcased the `G310R’. “They had an option to tie-up with other companies, but decided to go with us. This is a to go with us. This is a testimony to the trust BMW has on brand TVS,“ says TVS president and chief executive K N Radhakrishnan.
The relationship between the two brands is symbiotic as both get to gain from the other’s expertise in certain areas. While BMW helps in design, engineering and technology , TVS con tributes value engineering, and a rich supplier base, apart from knowledge of lower-displacement engines.
“The Hosur factory of TVS will be the sole manufacturing base for the bikes and both companies will carry their own brand identity . The models will be tailored to the will be tailored to the requirements and corporate philosophy of the individual brands,“ Radhakrishnan adds.
While there’s speculation about development of additional models, Radhakrishnan refused to confirm anything. “The finer details cannot be shared at this moment.“ TVS is also working on plans to aggressively grow its operations in the domestic market as it looks to increase its market share to 18% against the near14% now.
The company recent The company recently re-introduced the Victor brand into the market and hopes the 110cc model will help it gather volumes in the lower segments. TVS has also been focusing on growing its share in the scooter market as it looks to cash in on the boom in the category at a time when motorcycles remain flat.
